4 Things To Do With Old Ink Cartridges

When your printer runs out of ink what do you do with ink cartridges? Chances are you throw them.  Each year in the UK, over 375 million ink cartridges are thrown away and end up in landfill sites.

This is roughly 11 ink cartridges being thrown away each second!

When ink cartridges end up in landfill sites, they can take between 450 and 1000 years to decompose. And with approximately 70% of all ink cartridges and 50% of all toner cartridges not being recycled and ending up in landfills, that’s a lot of waste.

But what can you do? What are some better ways to make use of ink cartridges once you have finished with them? Here’s a short list of four of the best:

1. Refill Your Ink Cartridges

When your ink cartridges are empty, it doesn’t mean you should just throw them away. One of the great things about ink cartridges is that once the ink has gone, you can replace it with more ink. You can take empty cartridges to a place that refills them with ink, or you can buy a refilling kit and do it yourself. Whichever you choose, it’s better than them ending up in another landfill.

2. Sell Your Ink Cartridges

There are many places that will pay you money for your empty ink cartridges. Your empty and unwanted ink cartridges can start earning you some money instead of just being thrown away. Although you won’t earn much, it’s more than you’d get if you threw them away and you are also helping the environment.

3. Donate Your Ink Cartridges

There are places to sell empty ink cartridges to and there are places to donate ink cartridges to. Some charities and organizations will take empty ink cartridges off your hands to sell and raise money. Donating cartridges to them is an easy way to help out so that they can raise funds.

4. Recycle Ink Cartridges

There are many places where you can recycle empty ink cartridges. Some places may pay or, some may not. What is important is that your ink cartridges are being put to use, and not ending up in a landfill site.

Recycling ink cartridges in any way possible helps to reduce your carbon footprint and helps to lower the amount of waste that is polluting the environment. Ink cartridges are just one small thing that can be changed to stop unnecessary waste.

There’s no excuse to throw away your empty ink cartridges knowing that there are ways to put them to better use. Ink cartridges can always be put to a better use when they are empty, so consider your optiosn before you throw any out.
