County Durham Council Boosted By Fortnightly Recyling Collections

County Durham Council believes that its decision to switch to fortnightly waste collections has increased recycling rates.

It noted that an additional 3,956 tonnes were recycled between April and July when compared to last year's statistics, putting it on course to decrease its yearly landfill bill of £7.5 million, according to the BBC.

In 2011, every tonne of rubbish it sent to landfill cost around £100.

"Based on this increase, we are expecting that at the end of 2012/13, residents should have recycled more than 48 per cent of their waste," a council representative explained.

As well as councils, ink specialists have been working hard to recycle more goods, with Wireless News reporting that Kyocera picked up an award from the City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department for such work.

It recycled more than 26,730 pounds of paper, plastic and electronic waste throughout last year.
