Parent Teacher Group Recycles Ink Cartridges To Save Money

The Sebastian Middle School Parent Teacher Organisation (PTO) has undertaken a scheme which involves recycling ink cartridges and similar products in order to raise money for the school. While the concept of cartridge recycling is not necessarily a new one, the fact that the school can directly benefit from the scheme is somewhat groundbreaking.

Largely, the PTO is on the lookout for laser and ink jet printer cartridges which they can then recycle and turn into cash for their schools. Recent federal reports from the US showed that 53.7 million homes have computers with many of them also having printers. In addition, they stated that families toss out three to four ink cartridges per year on average.

Stephanie Styles, PTO president, told the St Augustine Record: "Volunteer Bob Aponte took the lead on this program three years ago and really turned it into something meaningful for us. Over the last year, we’ve received fewer donations from our student families. As the cost of school supplies has risen, we really depend on this program."
