UK Offices Produce 24% Of All UK Waste

Each year in Britain, 335 Million tonnes of waste is produced, but only 17.7% is recycled, which is one of the lowest recycling rates in Europe. A good chunk of this waste is produced by office workers.

Roughly 80.6 million tonnes of printing and paper is thrown away each year in the UK, which is 24% of all UK waste.

The average office work prints approximately 1584 sheets of paper each month, and with 25 million office workers in the UK, that’s a lot of paper that is not being recycled.

In the UK, the average office worker unnecessarily prints 50 sheets of paper each day. Approximately 70% of all office waste is recyclable, but on average only 7.5% actually gets recycled.

There are a few simple things that office workers can do to improve recycling:

-         Print on both sides of paper.

-         Reduce printing by using electronic communication where possible.

-         Only print out email if vital.

-         Don’t print too many copies of marketing materials, check out how many copies you actually need before printing.

-         Collect all paper that has been printed on just one side and reuse the blank side for unimportant documents.

-         Try to reuse envelopes, especially for sending internal documents.

-         Don’t throw away ink cartridges, recycle them.

-         Put recycling bins around the office.

-         Use mugs in drinks machines instead of plastic cups.

By recycling just one ton of paper, you can save 7000 gallons of water, 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of space in a landfill and 4,000 kilowatts of energy.
